Travel makes you brave, strong and fearless. Come along with us and let us help you Change Your Life, by traveling with confidence!
Editors Note: This is a very special guest post that Jane and I have been talking about doing for some time. I met Jane in Cali Colombia during my own beginning of travels in Colombia and during my first year of blogging. We were both just getting started on our blog projects. I had started Open Minded Traveler in November 2012 and Jane had started hers in 2012 too. Despite the generational difference in human years, in blogging years we have grown up together. I hope you check out her blog: ScarletJonesTravels.com. Be sure to like her on Facebook, and add her to your reading list! She has had many incredible travel experiences, is very knowledgable and everything you could ask for in an Open Minded Traveler. Enjoy ~ Erin | Editor
Do you want to feel valued, live life and believe in yourself again?
Hi, my name is Jane. I had always wanted to travel but I couldn’t even begin to imagine how I would ever be brave enough. I had always holidayed with the family – from bucket and spade type family holidays, to high-end Caribbean trips and European city breaks but, recently divorced, travelling solo was a different kettle of fish.
I yearned to see different cultures and to meet people outside the very nice gated beach resorts, but after 25 years in an emotionally abusive marriage my self-esteem was at rock bottom. I was too anxious to go the cinema alone, let alone travel in a foreign country.
Change Your Life
If you want something badly enough you’ll find a way.
….and I REALLY wanted to go backpacking. So I made a plan.
I set myself little challenges. I wrote lists like a maniac, I devoured self- help books and I mercilessly picked the brains of anybody who had ever travelled solo.
And then I went to the cinema by myself. I felt so self conscious until I saw another lady sat alone. I thought how brave she looked…and then I realised that perhaps people were not staring at me and thinking that I was odd, but maybe thinking that I was brave too.
Four years ago I quit my job and I set out from the UK to Peru. I am still travelling by volunteering and working online, while I travel, and meeting up with people along the way.
Whether you travel to the next town at weekends. Or take a bus or an aeroplane to the next state or country during your vacation. You can benefit as a person from the things that you will learn while you travel.
I began to write a book about my ‘journey’ along my path to self-confidence but I quickly realised that if I truly wanted to support and to encourage people to change in the same way, I would need more of a hands-on approach. I uploaded the draft into an online course, with one chapter sent out automatically every two weeks and online meetings scheduled at key points along the way.
The entire course takes ten months to complete (you can’t rush some things), although you can sign up to the first month to see how it works for you.
Special offer for readers of the Open Minded Traveler – you can get the VIP Offer by mentioning the Open Minded Traveler during your first call. You will receive 3 additional indepth calls at key points of the project. Keep Reading!
Let Travel Change You
Travel really does change you if you allow it to.
- Learn to be open-minded and be curious about the world and the people that you meet and you’ll learn so much. You’ll learn about different cultures, traditions, cuisine and history but you will learn even more about yourself.
- Discover how travelling reinforces your self-belief by showing that you can survive and that you’re capable of dealing with any problem that may pop up.
- Experience how travel boosts your self-esteem by proving that you can make friends and strangers may soon become close friends.
Solo travel especially, can educate you by demonstrating what it feels like to be the one who is different. The difficulties faced by millions to just get decent water or an education. The history that lies behind a nation’s problems.
‘But won’t I be lonely?’
When I travel I usually travel solo but I’m rarely alone. I normally stay in backpackers’ hostels where the majority of the people are friendly, interesting and supportive. You won’t have time to be lonely or to get homesick, but more than that, staying in hostels and being around a constantly shifting flux of different people can lift your self-esteem if you tackle your fears in the right way.
I didn’t plunge into solo travel but I built my self-confidence up slowly. I began small with little testing trips to the movies and then I ventured further afield by bus and train. Those steps are what form my online course: The Smash the Pumpkin Project.
‘But I don’t want to simply quit my job and set off around the world.’
The beauty of signing up to the project is that you don’t need to quit your job to take part in it.
Don’t Quit Your Job…Yet.
You can participate and work through the modules from your life as it is right now. Because whilst your ultimate goal may be to travel solo, that should not be the objective. The objective is to feel valued, really live life and to believe in yourself again.
Engage with the activities and the challenges where you will learn to view your life in a different way. And, allow you to think about the things that are holding you back. You will learn about your strengths and the things that bring you alive and you will incorporate them into your lifestyle.
Travel opens your mind and show you what you are capable of.
Learn to overcome the challenges that come with travel. Whether finding the bus timetable across Bolivia, or hunting down the best lasagne in Italy. My course will help you really open your mind to new possibilities.
Five years ago, I would never have dreamed that I would be living a nomadic lifestyle and loving just about every minute of it. Even the times when things go disastrously wrong – proves to me that I do have the confidence to cope. And now, I have friends all around the world.
On a final note, there are more good people in the world than bad so despite the current global security situation, please don’t be afraid to dip your toe in the water and test yourself. Who knows where you will be this time next year?
